We hope people enjoy reading through this and getting some ideas for how they could shop more locally. Also it should prove a great resource for things like doctors, police, and various other non-business organisations.

The Sneinton Winter Wonderland Festival
A Letter from Sneinton Festival Coordinator Holly about a new Sneinton Winter Festival!
“To Whom It May Concern,
This year sees a new pilot festival for the sneinton area. The winter wonderland Festival is a V Project and Trent FM sponsored event which aims to create new volunteering opportunities for young people aged between 16-25 years old. The festival has been established to allow all sections of the community, regardless of age, background or belief, to come together to help organise and develop the event, as well as to participate in all its activities. It celebrates both the area and the participants themselves, whether through education, arts, performance, display or sports. It also allows people from all the different cultures and with differing experiences, to meet at its workshops and social events cumulating in a final winter carnival day.
We will be recruiting young volunteers to work on a wide range of opportunities associated with a pilot winter festival using young people’s own interest, we will enable them to work with us to deliver the event then go on to mentor even younger people for the summer sneinton festival, work will be wide ranging from arts, music, drama, heritage, event management, catering, sports, costume making, lighting etc.
The coordinator will work closely with the existing youth groups as well as schools and with the neighbourhood team of the city council and the detached youth team, taster sessions will be offered in the various arts and programmes being developed. The coordinator herself is aged 22 and from a disadvantaged background, who over the years has built up an impressive portfolio with the creative arts industry, who will be able to mentor the various youth groups to encourage and to develop creative, organisational skills and in the future to work with the younger age group 11-16. Sneinton diverse population is the in the top 5/10 of disadvantaged communities, we aim to work with the increasing numbers of Eastern European as well as the Indian Pakistani and black groups.
The coordinator will enable 30 volunteers to deliver a small winter festival in sneinton and gain expertise in their own interests. In all cases we expect them to gain respect, confidence and a sense of belonging to a vibrant community. We wish to improve the picture for young people in sneinton, we will offer basic training in first aid and personal development and mentor in organisational skills, we will promote specialised training and accreditation for a proportion of volunteers and will be organising further opportunities, and this will lead for some to improved career opportunities. The volunteer project is designed to be a distinct part of the new winter festival, publicity and taster events are an important part of the project, we expect some young volunteers to work with us on these events and subsequently go on to further training and accreditation
Once this project proves to be successful, further funding will be sought to continue with the volunteers to deliver the sneinton summer festival 2009.
I would now like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to read the above information about our exiting new project and would like to invite you to get involved, in any way possible, if you can provide training, a taster day for our festival programme, publicity or if you just know someone who may be interested in volunteering, please do not hesitate to get in touch, as a new project we will work our hardest to accommodate any form of help and to build long standing relationships for further projects within the Nottingham community.
Yours sincerely

Festival Coordinator

"We've had a Wilde Time"
The Wilde Brothers Glaziers, who have occupied a central position on Sneinton Dale for over 20 years, have sold the business and are looking forward to their well earned retirement.
I caught up with them today to talk about how they started and the secrets of their success:
“We left school with no qualifications but went to the top of our profession, at one time having a crew of 40 men fitting huge glass panels. We have contracts with top businesses in Nottingham.
Actually when we started over 30 years ago we were doing all sorts of odd jobs before concentrating on glazing. When setting up your own business the key thing is not to pay yourself too much early on but put it back into the business so it can grow.
It’s been hard work, 7 days a week, on call 24hrs a day to do the emergency repairs. In this job we have seen all sides of life! But in that time we’re never had a complaint! However there have been more and more regulations come in over the years
We are really looking forward to retirement to do a bit of fishing, gardening and that sort of thing. We are still going to be active in the community because we are born and bred here.”
These skills are not easy to replace and Wilde Bros will be missed. SBF will keep you informed as to the buyer of their lot on the Dale and the new enterprise that is going to be created.
Well done Becky Adlington, double Olympic Champion and World Record holder in the 800m Freestyle.
What does Becky’s incredible achievement mean for the next generation of potential sporting champions from Nottingham City and especially the Eastside?
On a glorious weekend for British sport the highlight was Notts girl Becky Adlington breaking a 19 year old world record – the oldest in Swimming. Becky has been training with county club Nova Centurions 4 hours a day for the past 6 years.
To show our appreciation for her hard won achievements there will be an open top bus tour of Mansfield on Tuesday, August 26. It will leave the Civic Centre in Mansfield at 6pm and travel down West Gate to the Market Square.
But besides her perserverence of effort and the support of her family, what else contributed to her success?
The county council has invested in excess of £1m a year in Swimming. They invest far more than any other county council in the country. And young swimmers with talent are fed into high level squads to work alongside the top coaches.
Sherwood Swimming Baths in Mansfield (now to be re-named in her honour) has recently had a £4.5m upgrade. At the same time the City council was seeking to close Victoria Baths. Becky and the Nova Centurions train in Victoria Baths and Becky has said in an interview: “it’s closing in the next couple of months. So we’re having to go somewhere else.”
So could we really expect the next Becky to come from the East of the City, Sneinton or St Anne’s ? This Olympics has shown that well directed investment does produce results, so Sneinton Business Forum call on the council to either invest in Victoria Leisure Centre as a local sports facility for our youngsters or build a new one in the local area as part of the new City Academy planned for Carlton Road.
But can the City really close Victoria, an historic facility now made even more historic through it connection to one of our greatest althetes?
Incinerator Plans going up in Smoke? Inquiry launched!
Will the upcoming Public Inquiry be the final nail in the coffin for the Eastcroft Incinerator expansion plans?
The Public Inquiry into the proposed new extension to the Eastcroft Incinerator, which would add 100,000 Tonnes per year additional capacity, is being held at the Hilton Hotel, 38 Milton St, Notts, NG1 2PZ, starting on Tuesday 9th September 2008 at 9am.
The Inspector is appointed by the Secretary of State to decide the matter and interested parties may attend the Inquiry and at the Inspector’s discretion, express their views.
